All of Sea Bright turned out Sunday to pay tribute to "Squire" Jesse Howland whose funeral was held in the M. E. Church. It was one of the largest funerals ever held in the borough. The church was packed to the doors as well as were the lecture room and aisles. School children, Swedes and Americans, the colored and white population of the borough turned out in a body to pay their last respects.
The funeral services took place at one o'clock, a short service being first held at the house, in charge of Elder L. B. Giles of Eatontown who preached the sermon. Elder Giles who was in the East attending an Adventist convention came especially to preach the funeral.
The Masons and firemen gathered at the home of the late Mr. Howland at 12:30 and walked in two's to the church, with members of Ocean Fire Company, in uniform. In charge was Ex-Chief W. R. Fowler, in the lead. The Masons were in command of John H. Sutphen as marshal. There were upwards of a half dozen Masonic lodges represented in the funeral procession. Besides the two lodges at Long Branch, Mystic Brotherhood, No 21 of Red Bank, Hammonton, Atlantic Highlands and Eatontown lodges were represented. Favorite hymns of the deceased were sung by the choir. The closing selection was "Abide with me".

Rev. Dr. W. T. Valiant pastor of the Sea Bright M. E. Church made the opening prayer and closed with the benediction. Before announcing his text, Elder Giles paid a touching tribute to the late "Squire" Howland. He spoke of his uprightness of character and his spotless life. His text was "If a man die, shall he live again? The sermon was a masterly effort.
At the grave there was a short committal service in charge of Elder Giles followed by the Masonic service, in charge of Frank K. Gano as worshipful master, and John H. Sutphen as marshal. Upwards of fifty Masons deposited the evergreen in the grave. The casket was covered with an American Flag which was buried with the body. On "Squire" Howland's left breast was the Bible.
The pall-bearers were James Poole, Captain Miller Newman, Thomas L. Worthley, Former Mayor John W. Eyles and former Councilmen Winfield White and Joseph S. Mount.
There were many floral offerings contributed by the firemen, Masons, relatives and friends.
Mrs. Howland, widow of the deceased was unable to attend the funeral. She is still quite ill at her home though improving.

Notes for JOHN
E.
MOUNT:
In 1870 John was living at a Home in Brooklyn, New York, In 1880 he
was living with Dr. Stephen M. Drisbow and their family in Monmouth
New Jersey, he was now
16 years old. I researched Stephen Drisbrow and went back 4
generations. His Ancestor John D. Drisbrow, was born 9-9-1757 in
South Amboy, Middlesex, New Jersey. He had 7 children one of who is
Nicholas Morgan Drisbrow. Nicholas Morgan Drisbrow had a sister,
Hannah Drisbrow who Married a Richard Mount (1740-1787). Richard
Mount is John's Great Great Grandfather who fought in the American
Revolution.
It would appear as though the Mount's and the Drisbrow family
watched out for one another., even though 150 years in time had
passed. That's quite a dedication to family. I now wonder if John
knew about his Great Great Grandfather Richard and his Great Great
Grandmother Hanna. In 1930 census he was listed in Sea bright New
Jersey, which is where his son and my grandfather, George William
Mount was born. He passed away in 1935.
John E. Mount of Sea Bright died Friday morning in Monmouth Memorial
Hospital at Long branch. he was 70 years old. Mr. Mount was born in
Brooklyn and came to Sea Bright at the age of 20. He had resided in
that borough ever since. He was an exempt member of the Sea Bright
Fire Department and an honorary member of the Rumson fire
department. Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. Theresa DeBecker of
Red Bank, Mrs. L. S. Cook of South Amboy, Mrs. Arthur Burns of
Fords, Mrs. Nicholas A. Havaranis of Rumson, Mrs. H. C. Bloxan of
Fair Haven and Mrs. Arthur Costanzo of New York, and five sons,
Jesse Mount of Maywood, William Mount of Spring Field Gardens, Long
Island, Thomas Mount of Newark, John E. Mount Jr., of Fair Haven and
Corlies Mount of Red Bank.
The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the funeral
parlors of R. R. Mount & Son on East Front Street, Red Bank, with
Rev. Herbert S. Craig, rector of the Trinity Episcopal Church,
officiating. Burial was in Fair View Cemetery, where members of the
Sea Bright fire department conducted services.

FINDS OLD COIN TREASURE. Jersey Man Picks Up Valuable Relics in Manasquan Inlet.
SEABRIGHT, NEW JERSEY., 8 July 1937. A coin collector's treasure, sixty-five old American gold coins, was poured this morning from a small iron bank dug out of the sand on the shore of the Manasquan Inlet, near Point Pleasant. The Finder was Jesse A. Howland, a bulkhead contractor, of Sea bright., who has been collecting old coins for a long time, but never in such easy fashion. The coins have a total face value of $250, but Mr. Howland estimates their value at between $6,500 and $10,000 to a collector. The coins are in one, three five and ten dollar denominations. The oldest is dated 1797 and the latest 1877.
Mr. Howland, who will add the coins to his own collection, saw the deeply corroded bank sticking out of the sand when he went to investigate the effect of a ship's wash on the sand near the framework for a bulkhead. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse A. Howland of Washington Avenue, Rumson who were married in Holy Cross Church by the late Monsignor Fox, celebrated their golden wedding, Tuesday with a family dinner, followed by "open house" at their residence, Riverbank.
More than 200 friends were greeted at the home where they called to personally express to the couple their congratulations and best wishes for many more years of happy married life. The dining table decorations were featured by white flowers in antique gold containers in the center. The celebrants were well remembered with gifts. Warrant Officer Patrick J. Byrne, a son-in-law of the couple, flew from Newfoundland to be present at the family gathering. Also attending was Mrs. Ellen Lane of Long Branch, who is 99 years old, and is a member of the Howland family tree, a painting of which was prominently exhibited in the home. At the family dinner were the four sons and their wives; the daughter and husband, and eight grandchildren. They included Mr. and Mrs. Addison Howland, Mr. and Mrs. J. Edward Howland, Mr. and Mrs. George W. Howland, Mr. and Mrs. Hartson Howland, and Mr. and Mrs Byrne. Grandchildren were Charlotte, Jesse, Shirley, Jean, Frank, Barbara and Mary Ellen Howland and Nancy Byrne. Mr. Howland heads the well known contracting firm of Jesse A. Howland & Son's, Inc. 50 Church Street, Sea Bright, and has long been recognized as an authority of bulkhead construction and beach protection
Jesse Addison Howland president of the Jesse A. Howland and Son's contractors of Sea Bright, noted along the North Atlantic seaboard for his construction of piers, jetties and seawalls died last night at his home on Washington avenue Rumson after an illness of six weeks. He was 75. Mr. Howland an authority on beach protection was assigned in 1928 by ex-Governor Harry Moore to make a survey of the New Jersey seacoast to determine necessary protection against storm damage and erosion. More than 50 years ago he went into business for himself starting a career which has had a profound effect on the coast line of New Jersey. More than a score of jetties reaching out from beaches of the Jersey coast line are the result of Mr. Howland's work. His first job as an independent operator when he was 20 years old was a plank-and-pile bulkhead at Sea Bright, improving his methods thru constant study and experimentation during the next 30 years. In 1919 he adopted rock construction. His first rock jetty was also built at Sea Bright. This proved so successful that Mr. Howland was asked to build a similar rock jetty at Asbury Park where the northern beach had suffered deep erosion. The city fathers were skeptical and inserted a clause providing for a 15 percent forfeit if two feet of new beach above the high water mark were not produced in 18 months.
Mr. Howland recently showed a Press reporter photographs taken by himself showing that ten months after construction was completed three feet of sand had been added. Since then the beach has risen more than 20 feet and the improvement is perceptible all along the strand. Other Howland jetties and seawalls are at Sandy Hook, Long Branch, West end, Monmouth Beach, Deal, Loch Arbour, Avon, Belmar, Manasquan, Sea Girt, Point Pleasant and Bay Head. Farther to the south his jetties stretch into the sea from Barnagat Light. Beach Haven, Harvey Cedars, Ventnor, Margate, Ocean City and as far to the south as North Carolina. In 1927 Mr. Howland was commissioned by Governor Moore to survey European beach-conservation methods and he told recently of standing on the long mound type jetties of Holland, discussing with Dutch engineers the advantages of his type of rock jetty over the mound-type of rock jetty over the mound-type of rock jetty over the mound-type common on continental beaches.
A true son of Monmouth county related to many of the original settlers, the exact date of which the Howland family first came to the county is not known. Records show that Mr. Howland was the seventh generation of Howland's in Monmouth County. However the female branch of the family came to the county two generations earlier, making nine generations of Howland's to have lived continuously in the county. The original Howland homestead located in Long Branch was burned in 1911. A painting of the Howland Family Tree covering a canvas 53 inches by 88 inches bordered by family coats-of-arms was exhibited in the Press window some years ago. It now hangs in the hall of Mr. Howland's Rumson home, one of his prized possessions. A collector of antiques and a lifelong collector of stamps and coins. His collection is valued at $100,000.
Mr. Howland whose wife Mary A. Norton Howland died a year ago was born in Oceanport, the son of Jesse And Maria James (McWood) Howland. He is survived by a daughter Mrs. Patrick Byrne, Rumson and by four sons, all engaged in the family business. Addison J, J. Edward and Hartson, Rumson and George W. of Little Silver. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Deborah Armstng, Rumson; and Mrs. George Congdon, Highlands; Two brothers. John Howland, Keansburg and Corlies Howland, Neptune; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the John W. Flock Funeral Home, Long Branch
