85 McKinley Ave (1946)

My Childhood experiences growing up, a short story by the author Harry Mount

I remember as small boy living n Brooklyn, New York, more specifically 85 McKinley Avenue. My Father worked at Packard motor company with my grandfather in New York City. We always had clean clothes to wear and flood on the table  It was Easter Sunday  in the mid 1940,s, I was playing handball at the garage on our street in my light flannel that my parents bought for me. Low and behold I slipped and fell in the Greece at the garage. What a mess. I won't tell you what the consequences were you will just have to use your imagination. It was a lesson well learned.

In the late 40's both of my parents were hospitalized at the same time. My mother had female problems after the birth of my youngest sister Alberta, and my father had heart problems. They were both in the hospital for months at a time. My brother Arnold, Sisters Margaret and Alberta were real little and we had to go into foster care homes.  Needless to say it was a major crisis in my life to separated from my mom and dad and brother and sisters.

I wrote a letter to my grandparents who were living in Los Angeles, California. I addressed to Mrs. George W. Mount,  Los Angeles, California. How she got the letter  was truly a miracle and fate was on my side. I wrote the following "Gramie, I want to come and stay with you." Next thing I new a plane ticket arrived for me and I was on my way to Los Angles, California. I stayed in California with my grandparents for about six months. I missed mom and dad and my brother and sisters. It was time to go back home to New York, it was now fall of 1948.

My father bought this cute little house, at 6 Karigan Court, East Rockaway, New York,  That's my good looking sister Margaret at the old house. The Picture was taken in 2002 when we attended a class re-union. It was a small Summer 2 bedroom, 1 bath house, about 850 Square feet. The house hasn't changed much and brought lots of fond childhood memories. It was probably he happiest times of my life to be back home again with my family. I remember helping my father add the small addition on the house that he used as his work shop. If you look in the top left hand side of the picture you can see the yellow structure built 60 years ago.

Our house was 2 blocks from the beach and the canal was just down the street. I remember playing hid and seek every night during the summer, swimming in the canal and teasing one of our neighbors. We use to call him old man Moley and he would always chase us out of his yard.  My aunts and Uncles would come out to our house from the city in the Summer months. It was the fun house like the River house in Washington.

From there we moved to Levittown, a little further out on Long Island where I graduated high school. I moved to California with the family in 1959 and started on my life's journey and adventure which brings us up to current times. More about me can be found in the next Chapter.
